A people of the same religion and culture shattered by international boundaries
                                                                                                                                                                                                   By Pu Lian
Dear  all,
I appreciate people who have interest in the issue to have a joint single name for all the related people in the Indo-Burma-Banglade sh borders as they are the same people religiously, culturally and, linguistically speaking one of the same branches of Tibeto-Burman language in addition to the same physical feature they have of  Mongoloid ancestries.  So in support of such people, I would like to make a presentation  here to be  considered by all.
Of course we are to see differences even among the siblings of the same parents if we seek for our differences, as we should also find so many similarities among all human beings as the people of the world. But what we mean by the same people here is the people whose similarities over weight their differences especially similarity of religion in addition to their other similar affinities.
Thus the similarities that makes the people on the borders of Indo-Burma-Banglade sh borders as a single people to have a singe name to include  all of them  is presented here. The similar affinities  among the people of the Indo-Burma-Banglade sh borders accepted and recognized by the British in the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 still stand as the  very convincing evidences tii today.  Many of us, on the above mentioned borders can easily conceive that we are really the same single people  if we set aside all local prejudices we have had. So it is presented here to be deeply considered of the great advantages we could all get by doing so.
When we think of our political future,  even though it may be just a day dream for people of this generations who are much infested by local prejudices, we have to think it interns of the frame work of the United Nations Charter and its protocols as they are internationally accepted principles because  we are to be far sighed as assaying goes boundaries are drawn and redrawn and history are written and rewritten.
According to the case of the United Nations and Portugal in 1963 and the proclamation of Universal Declaration of de-colonization,  the prima-facie principles of evidence for a people under a single name to get self governing territory should be that the people concern should have the same distinct language and culture in a clear cut boundary of territory.
We all the people on Indo-Burma-Banglade sh borders in comparison to Indians, Bangladeshis and Burmese/Burmans have already accepted each other from one region to another that we have so many similar affinities to be a single people under one name. So we are now in search of the most inclusive name out of the several names in local and international names with which people outside our common frontier have recognized us.
It will be very wrong if some people think that any popular nomenclature without any historical background could be possible for a national name. It may be possible in the case like North America, which Columbus discovered as a new continent to which the name given was just the name of a man who drew the map of it.  We can take any name in such case, as there is none to challenge the name. But there is no a single land which is undiscovered on earth these days.
In normal cases, as we have mentioned above, the legitimacy of owning a territory is so vitally needed for a people in claiming the territory as their own according to the principles set forth for people who would like to claim a territory. The reason is we are to expect any people or parties who will challenge and question such claim.
So it means that no name for any territory can be given without any consistent historical background of the territory concern. It should not be like Jesus Christ was crucified with a mob decision. No one justified the crucifixion of Jesus Christ to be a just and fair decision. So the Judge, Pilate, himself even cleansed his hands with water that he was not responsible for the unjust crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The reason was there was no sufficient criminal evidence to crucify Him to death even in Roman’s law in those days.
Here we have the names “Mizo” and “Zomi” the reverse name of each other.  The name “Mizo” has been created as Mizo Union in 1949 having an area of only 800 square miles today, almost only half the size of the present Chin state.  “Zomi” was also created as Zomi Baptist Convention only as the name of a Baptist Christian organization in 1953 having no any clear territory in legal government administration.  It is somewhat like a vague name with no specified territory.
Both names have been created only after India and Burma Independence in the territory of Indian Union and the Union of Burma respectively. So the two names have no any distinct existence by themselves previous to that date in the history. So India and Burma respectively can claim them that they are respectively created within the territory of the Indian Union and with in the territory of the Union of Burma for having no existence any where else before the date of the independence of India and Burma.
The name Kuki might claim that it has existed since before the time of independence of India and Burma, but it is like a vague name as there is no clear-cut boundary of territory till today. So it is like if it is not in existence so far like the name Zomi.
Nagaland and Naga Hills could claim that the name Naga has been in existence in the Greek literature since 650 AD. But the two areas together are not even smaller or not larger than the present Chin State territory.
The so called Chin-Kuki-Mizo- Naga people now as we have mentioned as the people of Indo-Burma-Banglade sh undeniably recognize their common similar affinities as a people in addition to them having the same native religion in the past and having the same common religion, Christianity, at present in this modern time though they are at present in different small patches of territories divided by international boundaries. But there is no territory to be claimed in this name Chin-Kuki-Mizo- Naga in the history.
We have ever once posted here in this Kuki Forum that a people without a territory is like if they do not exist. We took the Gypsy people as an example who exist without a territory in many countries and they remain secondary citizens even though they took the citizenship of the country they live. Israel people reestablished their own territory as an independent nation country in 1948 as they could no longer tolerate being in diasporas for two thousand years like Gypsy.
The Chin-Kuki-Mizo- Naga once jointly had together an undeniable territory of definite clear cut boundary of their own, demarcated by the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 which was recognized internationally as a part of the law of the British government and its Empire by the colony countries in the Empire and by all the nations that recognized the existence of the British government and its Empire. Many of those colony nations in the British Empire have been now UN members as sovereign independent countries.  They could come to support our boundary as they are to recognize the existence of the Chin people and their territory through the existence of the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 which is the authentic evidence still existing in many libraries.
That territory in which the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 was enforced was designed to be a British province under a British governor from the beginning of its annexation by the British till it was meant to carve out to be a Province under the Crown Colony scheme in 1946. It was for administrative purposes divided into not less than five districts such as the two Naga Hills Districts, Lushai Hills District, Chin Hills District, Chittagong Hills Tract District and some more districts in all of which the same law Chin Hills Regulation 1896 was enforced directly or indirectly as the territory of the same people administer able with that single law as a people.
Even Pu A.Z. Phizo, the Nagaland leader who led the cause of Nagaland independence unsuccessful in his lifetime was said to have lamented that the Crown Colony scheme was lost by all of us for some reasons.  It shows that he accepted the five districts to be under an administration for the Crown Colony Scheme was certainly that could lead us to total independence like the vision of Pu A.Z. Phizo and Pu Laldenga.
Many people within these five districts still dream the creation of freedom of the five districts, which are now Nagaland, Mizoram, Chin State and Naga Hills or Khamti District and the Chittagong Hills Tract district as they accept that we are a people of the same culture and religion which once owned a vast territory of clear-cut boundary but shattered into several portions by international boundaries.
The universal concept is that it is the dream of every self-respecting people to have freedom to decide and determine their own fate according to the UN Charter and many of its protocols. At the same time there is no permanent boundary on earth. Histories are written and re-written and boundaries are drawn and redrawn at the bidding and will of the people.  The mighty Soviet Union was undone in 1990 and 15 States including Russia came out from its gigantic ruins. However, we are to be aware that those 15 states become into their being of what they are now basing on their respective historical backgrounds. Israel could claim their historic territory created at the time of their history under King David and Solomon, as the demarcation of their clear-cut boundary exist in the internationally recognized Book, the Holy Bible.
Pakistan and India separate each other on the line of different religion of faith though they were both Aryans. The people who occupied the five territories today -  Nagaland, Naga Hills, Chin State, Mizoram and Chittagong Hills Tract were once in one territory as the same people of the same native religious belief and the same language of a branch of Tibeto-Burman language of the same Mongoloid ancestry.
We usually wrote that mothers of the people in this territory of not less than five districts would see a blue small spot in the buttock or around it of their babies to realize that the people in the districts are the same and only one people. In addition to that they share the same religious faith in their modern religion the Christianity that they all transformed it together to be their common modern religion at the same period of only a hundred years from their similar native religion.  Our great difference with the people of Aryan ancestry is that they do not have that blue spot in their babies’ bodies as a wonderful thing of God creation.
Their national name Chins and their territory, the boundary of which was demarcated in five districts under the international recognized law, the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 is now existing as a strong authentic evidence with which they were ruled under the British Empire once. It still exists as very strong evidence with which to claim their territory outside India and Burma as the two countries of which none except the native people of the five districts have full authority to claim it together.
The British when they annexed India in 1760 AD and Burma in 1885 AD., discovered a vast independent territory which none of India or Burma   ruled outside their territories. They found out that the inhabitants of the vast territory practiced the culture and language of the people so inscribed as Chin in the stone inscription created in 750 AD and discovered it in 1300 AD. No trace of Burmese settlement was found throughout the Chindwin valley above Mon-ywa till 1500 AD except that the whole territory was left only to the Chin people.  The name “Chindwin river” was given after the name of the Chin people meaning a river within the Chin territory.
You will see no other names Mizo or Zomi or Kuki or Laimi or Cho except Chins which has such a wide territory in its name supported by the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 which is internationally recognized once and the name Chindwin river and the similarity of native culture and language and the modern common religion, the Christianity which has been shared and transformed from their common native religion as it was so close to it in the faith of life after death and the sacrifice both believe.
The name Naga was said to have been mentioned also in the Greek literature round about 650 AD.  But Chins were also called Nagas by Indians that came to Chin Hills in the early days of the British rule by judging the similarity of their native religion and culture accusing them of too being head hunters like Nagas which the Chins ancestry should not deny.
If this people, so name by some people as Chin-Kuki-Mizo- Naga want to claim a common name with the territory it covered once in the history that hold them together on the basis of the cultural similarities and religion, there is no better name than Chins. The reason is it had held all of us all together once with which we were all internationally recognized not only by the would be independent nations in those days which by now are in the UN members. But the name Chins was recognized also by all the nations which once recognized the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 as a part of the Law of the British government and the British Empire. The Chin Hills Regulation clearly defined as Chins includes Lushais, Kukis, Nagas, Chins in the Chin Hills and any person who practice the culture and language of the Chins.
We are all to accept that the invasion, the annexation and ruling of our territory by the British was for our own good as a blessing in disguise of our heavenly Father and Jesus Christ whom all of us in Nagaland, Mizoram and Chin State have proclaimed as our only Lord and Savior. It is the teaching of Jesus Christ in the Lord’s Prayer to for give and forget as He himself forgave those who crucified Him, as they not know what they did.
Let us realized that any mis-happening in the North East India is all due to “Divide and rule policy” adopted as a method to hold the great India together to be able to control all the warring minorities as undeveloped tribal people from the central. Thus all the mis-happenings in the North East India are all for us the Christian land and Christian society to forgive and forget for our lasting freedom in peace and prosperity like our Jesus Christ did to His crucifiers.
It means that we all of us have been in the same religion in the past and present. It was because of our similar faith in our native religion which was very close to Christianity in life after death in heaven and in the sacrifice of the life of Jesus Christ that our fore fathers in the same period and span of a hundred years all created our land to be a joint Christian land where the Lord Jesus Christ rule us with his Holy Bible together in the same faith in Him.
Let us not turn deaf ears and blind eyes to all these glaring evidences because of local prejudices and the childish and lowly metal interpretation of the term. It is a name bestowed to us by our Lord to accept that the discovery, the invasion, annexation and ruling of our territory by the British had happened as a blessing in disguise to us as the same people in its truth in the same name in a very vast independent land in which no one ruled us once except by our native royal families and land owners outside any world power.
Having the name Chins in the past to modern age as our national name is thus like a lottery ticket that will lead us to total freedom one day. Thus to discard the name Chins will be for us like a Hong Kong porter man who discard his lottery ticket in his yoke in over joyfulness of getting a lottery money of a million. He thus threw his yoke far away into the sea waves in his over joyfulness thinking that he no longer need his yoke as he had become a millionaire rich man by getting the million money in the lottery ticket.  But it was no use when he was in serious repentance for throwing away his yoke into the sea when he could no longer draw the million money to remain as a poor porter man again because he could no longer find the ticket in his yoke anywhere else again.
So we shall be now here like him if we discard the name Chin that holds our total freedom in it. It has been the name accepted for generations with pride as a symbol of distinctive cultural and political identity. Actually no one knows what it means originally, it might not come from Burmese language as Burmese were latecomers into the present territory of the UB. It just means the name of a people including Lushai, Kukis, Nagas; Chins in the Chin Hills and any person who practice Chin language and culture. Thus to inter prêt it otherwise could mean an insult to the people.
What we have to be aware of is we can no longer take any new national name without showing the evidence of its historical merits, as we have to expect that there will be people who will challenge our claim of territory with our national name. If we cannot show the historical legitimacy of our ownership of the territory in competing with others, our claim will be no match to the challengers.
No national names of ours in local dialects have better and consistent historical back ground than the name Chins as we have shown above. India adopt English as there county’s official language approaching to have several official languages in which Manipuri, might be Meithei, is one of them. Our several dialects among the Chin-Kuki-Mizo- Naga have already many similarities in their grammar and in their vocabularies which could all be mutually intelligible one day if we nurture by creating ever-easier communications by all means.
But let us not forget that the local names like Cho, Kuki, Laimi, Mizo, Naga, Zomi will keep on existing though we may take Chins as our international name like the local names Bharat and Hindustan keep on existing though the name India is adopted as an official international name of the country. Please see also in the attachment as it will be easier to read. Thanks for reading patiently. Lnk.

Celebration of 64th Anniversary
Chin National Day
 in Singapore
Singapore, February 19, 2012
The 64th anniversary of Chin National Day (CND) was successfully celebrated by the Chins living in Singapore on 19th February 2012, Sunday from 1:30pm to 7:15pm at the 1,200 seater Convention Centre of Singapore Polytechnic. The attendance was estimated to be about 1,100. The whole event was presented by Tin Moe Lwin, a famous celebrity from Yangon. The celebration was officially opened with a word of prayer by Rev. Dr. Cho Mana Ling (Mindat), in-charge pastor of Myanmar Service at Church of Singapore (COS).

The programme was divided into three sessions. The first session began with a short video clip presentation of about 7 minutes, showcasing rare photos of Chin people, beautiful landscapes of Chin State, archived photographs taken prior to the British occupation (1892) and a brief history of Chins and Chin National Day which was compiled by Van Thawng Lian and Ro Thawng. This short presentation caught the attention of the audience who had never been to Chin State, most of them Singaporeans. One of the 64th CND sponsors, a Burmese businessman from Peninsula Plaza, said "I have never thought the landscapes of Chin state will be that beautiful and the place will be that nice. I would like to travel and see for myself one fine day." Among the audiences were Singaporean students, invited by our Chin students, who saw the beautiful sceneries of Chinland for the very first time. They expressed that they liked the hilly mountains view, the towns and villages situated on top of the mountains as well as the Var bridge (Manipur River) and the beautiful Bungtla water fall. Another Singaporean, who had been providing musical equipments for most of the Myanmar concerts here in Singapore commented, "I have never known about Chin people in Myanmar in the past, thinking only that you all are Burmese. Only now, from that video clip, I know about Chin people and I see such a beautiful place."
The celebration continued with a welcome speech and greeting of honourable guests and the audiences by Mr. Ro Thawng, chairman of the 64th CND organizing committee and chairman of Chin Christian Fellowship, Singapore (CCFS) in 2011-12. Distinguished guests invited include 1st and 2nd secretary of Union of Myanmar Embassy in Singapore and representatives from each indigenous people of Myanmar such as Kachin, Kaya, Kayin, Mon, Rakhaing, Shan and Bamar.
The second session began with performances of various Chin traditional dance such as Thang Ho and Lian Do Dance by Zomi Family, Bamboo Dance by Falam Christian Fellowship, Group Dance by Mara Evangelical Church, Bamboo Dance by Mizo Christian Fellowship, Saar Laam (victory dance) by Lai Christian Fellowship and Harvest Dance by Kachin Christian Fellowship.
The energetic dances were followed by a colourful array of fashion show depicting Chin traditional costumes from Hakha, Falam, Tedim, Mindat, Paletwa, Mara, Mizo as well as costumes of other ethnic groups in Myanmar. The beautiful and colourful traditional costumes fashion show ended with a modern dress fashion show.

Following that was a 10 minutes recess, during which a short video clip was presented in honour of the Academy award winner for Best Actress in Leading Role for 2010, Zung Cer Mawi aka Thet Mon Myint who hails from Falam native. She was the first Chin to be crowned the highest honour for her outstanding performance in the industry. The 2010 Academy award presentation was held in the capital Naypidaw on 5th February 2012 and it was telecasted live from MRTV-4 to the whole country. At the end of the clip, the audience gave an overwhelming respond with a thunderous round of applause. Academy Zung Cer Mawi initially planned to be in Singapore to participate in our CND celebration but she had to recall it due to her tight schedule for shooting films in Myanmar. The short video clip was followed by a performance put up by Sunday School children from Falam Christian Fellowship (FCF). The second session was then closed with a word of thanks to everyone, given by secretary for CCF, Michael Pau Khan Thawn.
The third session continued with live concerts accompanied by a music band that was made up of and started by Chin musicians called Desert Rose. The band comprised of Salai Cung Aung, lead guitarist, Seng Aung on drum, Jinpi on bass and Mung Mung on keyboard. A total of eleven (11) singers were invited for the concert, most of whom are nation wide well known Chin singers. Invited artists include  Sung Tin Par, Sang Pi, Chaw Su Khin, Thawn Kham and special guest singers, L Lun Wa of Kachin and Wyne Suh Khaing Thein. Regional singers from Chin State were also invited, namely Susan from Falam, Van Dawt Cin from Hakha, Lai Mary from Mara, Lalnunsanga from Mizo (Tahan), and Esther Cingsan from Tedim.
Chaw Su Khin said, "I am truly Chin of Sonetu tribe, born in Rakhaing State, raised in Shan State and live in Yangon. I am very proud to be a Chin, and very honoured to be here with Chin brothers and sisters in Singapore." The veteran Chin singer also added, "I am so surprised to see so many beautiful Chins dressed like this at the same time."  All the singers gave their best shot and the audiences enjoyed themselves and were very satisfied with the performances.
The main sponsors of 64th CND celebration were Myanmar Airways International (MAI), Lily Shoes Collections, Chin Hill Collections, Mr. & Mrs. Ro Thawng and co-sponsors were business companies and individuals such as Thapyay-Nu, Than Than Travels, YaNant-Thit Restaurant, Royal Fashion & Shoes, Lucky Boss Film & Video production, Taw Winn Pte Ltd, Forever Enterprise, Pu Pau Za Mung & family, Mah-Mah-Kyi Mawlamyaing Hair Saloon, The Look provided professional makeup services and The Broken Wings media provided video live screening using multiple camera, recording and productions.  A special word of thanks was mentioned to singer and song writer, Sangpi, for his priceless contribution to make this event possible.
The intangible benefits from CND this year were enormous. Our beloved brothers from Paletwa, Mindat, Kanpalet and Asho also turned up despite our ethnic and religious differences and we celebrated this historical Chin National Day hand in hand with them. On top of that, the rich and vibrant Chin customs, traditions, cultures and costumes were also showcased and proclaimed to the world. The entire event was recorded in High Definition video by the Broken Wings Media Pte Ltd, owned by Myanmar businessman Mr. Thurain John Moe and the recording will be available in Blue Ray disc and DVD in a few months time.

Chin National Day is celebrated every year in Singapore since early 1990s with worship service and the 64th anniversary Chin National Day is celebrated grandly for the first time  and organized by Chin Christian Fellowship (CCF) founded in 1995. CCF is formed by representatives from various churches and Christian Fellowships that use their mother language as base for worship such as: - Zomi Innkuan Singapore (ZIS), Falam Christian Fellowship (FCF), Lai Christian Fellowship (LCF), Mara Evangelical Church (MEC), Mizo Christian Fellowship (MCF) and Lai Christian Fellowship (LCF). Chin individuals from various denominations that worship in Burmese services such as Church of Singapore (COS), Elim Myanmar Christian Fellowship (EMCF) and Full Gospel Assembly (FGA) also form part of CCF. CCF organizes combined worship service five times in a calendar year:- 1) Chin National Day in February, 2) Sing Song Service in May, 3) Mission Day in July, 4) Khuado Festival in October and 5) Christmas in December. An Inter Fellowship Friendly Soccer Tournament is also held every year on Labour Day, in the month of May, under CCF.
The first ever large scale celebration of 64th Chin National Day in Singapore was not only made possible but also a success at such huge scale is all thanks to the hard work put in by every member of the Organizing Committee, the support and contributions from all members of respective fellowships, the sponsorships and donations from each dedicated individual participant and last but not least, by the grace of God.
The celebration of 64th Chin National Day was concluded with a prayer by Rev. Esther Lam Ciin of Elim Myanmar Christian Fellowship (EMCF).
